Hello — we’re the Golden Door team
Golden Door began in 2023 as one woman’s kitchen project. Micha Davies — Sydney-based, twenty-something, deeply suspicious of the idea that healthy food has to taste like cardboard — started writing up the recipes she actually cooked for herself between work and weekends. The site filled out fast, and by the time the recipe count hit fifty, it was clear we needed more hands on the wooden spoon.
So now there’s a few of us. Micha still runs the recipe development. Tanya leads the wellness and product-trial side (she’s the reason we now have very strong opinions about conditioner). Nicole writes most of our nutrition deep-dives, Mei handles the Asian-inspired recipes she grew up cooking with her grandmother, and Dave — the only person at Golden Door who can be trusted with the BBQ — looks after the savoury and grilled side of the menu.
What we’re trying to do here
The pitch is simple: we want to be the friend you text when you’re staring into the fridge at 6:47pm wondering what to make. We want to be the bookmark you go back to when your iron levels come back low and you need ideas that aren’t just “eat more spinach”. We want to be a small, honest counterweight to the firehose of wellness nonsense that fills most Australian feeds.
What that looks like in practice:
- Recipes we’d actually make on a Tuesday. Real ingredients you can find at Coles or Woolies, cook times that respect a working week, and serving sizes that feed humans rather than food-stylist photo sets.
- Wellness writing without the woo. If we’re going to tell you something is good for you, we’ll tell you why, and we’ll tell you what the evidence actually says — including when the evidence is thin.
- Honest product reviews. When we trial something, we trial it for weeks across the whole team, and we tell you what we’d really keep using. We don’t run sponsored reviews dressed up as opinion.
- Australian-first. Australian water, Australian seasons, Australian ingredients, Australian retail. Most of the wellness internet is written for someone in California with a Whole Foods around the corner. We’re written for someone in Brisbane in February or Hobart in July.
What we won’t do
We won’t tell you that any single ingredient is magic. We won’t sell you a 14-day cleanse. We won’t hide the fact that some weeks we order pizza. The internet has enough of that. Our job is to give you better food and better information, in a way you can actually use.
Want to say hi?
Recipe requests, product suggestions, “your croquette recipe saved my dinner party” emails — they all go to the same place. Hit us up via the Contact page, or chase us in the comments under any of the posts. We read everything.
Thanks for being here. Now go cook something.
— Micha, Tanya, Nicole, Mei & Dave
